Mohawk Moves Distribution Center To Hanover, VA
Hanover, VA, Aug. 20--The tan and gray building with burgundy trim is a blur to thousands of I-95 travelers. Mohawk Industries, though, is big business in Hanover, as reported in the Hanover Herald Progress. The Fortune 500 company moved one of its distribution centers to the Crescent Business Center less than two months ago and the dust is still settling. "We moved in the last weekend in June and we were up and running by the next Monday," said Bruce Tate, manager of the Ashland center. "We've just about got things in order now." And, as the largest U.S. manufacturer and distributor of floorcoverings in the world, there's plenty to do. Answer calls. Unload trucks. Organize hundreds of carpet rolls. Reload trucks. Make deliveries. "We have one of the most efficient delivery systems in the country," Tate said. "We work very hard to make this company the best." The company supplies independent carpet retailers, home centers, commercial dealers and contractors with everything from carpet and rugs to ceramic tile and hardwood flooring. The Mohawk family of brands includes Mohawk, Karastan, Dal-Tile and Mohawk Home. "You can find our products everywhere," Tate said. From Wal-Mart to Target, Lowe's to Macy's. The Ashland distribution center receives shipments from the Georgia-based customer service center, Tate said. The shipments are unloaded and redistributed to most areas in Virginia, with the exception of Northern Virginia and the far Southwest. The center relocated not only for additional space, but also for the location, he said. "We outgrew where we were and Hanover seemed conducive to our type of business," Tate said. "The accessibility to the interstate is a huge help to us because we're constantly on the move." Now, the company fills 36,000 square feet and has room to grow. The Ashland location runs 14 delivery trucks, but plans to double the number in a few years, said Jeff Edwards, Mohawk operations manager. "Hanover is a good location for us and we plan to keep growing," he said. Tate supervises 26 employees, who work both day and midnight shifts, with the help of an assistant manager, Jim Breeden. "Everyone who works here is highly skilled," Tate said. "And Mohawk takes care of its employees." Mohawk employs about 30,000 nationwide.
