Mohawk Donates Carpet to Habitat for Humaniity
Dalton, GA, Mar. 31--Thirty-eight homes in 38 days. As part of the celebration for Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, the National Football League teamed with the Houston division of Habitat for Humanity International to stage a major construction project, SuperBUILD, with the ambitious goal of building 38 homes in 38 days. Mohawk Industries participated by providing carpet for many of the homes. Officially sanctioned by the National Football League as a Super Bowl XXXVIII event, SuperBUILD deployed an estimated 2,500 volunteers to construct the new homes in two subdivisions just north of the city. The NFL has sponsored and built Habitat homes in four Super Bowl cities over the past decade; however, this marks the first time a multi-home project has been launched by Habitat for Humanity International and the NFL in conjunction with the annual football championship. During the Super Bowl week, NFL players from the Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and other teams contributed labor to the effort to build the homes. The Mohawk carpet provided was placed in 26 homes, covering all the projects in one of the subdivisions. Mohawk staff also participated in events surrounding the home construction. “We’re pleased we could participate in this project, and we strongly support the efforts of Habitat for Humanity,” said Ed Williams, Senior Vice President of Marketing. “An organization that not only helps people into better housing but also gives them the skills to succeed in life is doing a great service.” Since 1987, Houston Habitat for Humanity, a not-for-profit organization, has built more than 400 new, affordable homes for hard-working, motivated buyers who lack the means to qualify for conventional mortgages. Homebuyers are selected based on their level of need, their willingness to contribute “sweat equity” toward the construction of their own and their neighbors’ homes, and their ability to repay a zero-interest loan for the exact cost of their home. Mortgage payments are deposited into a revolving fund for future loans, and public and private sector contributions help defray land acquisition and construction costs, thereby reducing the overall price of a Habitat house, making it more “affordable.”
