Mohawk Decides To Close Virginia Backing Plant

Waynesboro, VA, Oct. 20, 2009--Mohawk Industries will close its Waynesboro plant by the end of the year, according to the News Virginian.

The firm had begun scaling back operations earlier this year but did not indicate it would ultimately close the plant.

The continued slump in the housing market and dwindling demand for carpet, has forced the closure.

The Waynesboro facility produces the primary backing for carpeting, just one part of the company’s diverse flooring production. Mohawk came to Waynesboro in 2005, occupying the former Wayn-Tex facility.

Mohawk also said it will consolidate the two spinning mills in Greenville, N.C.

About half of the 27 workers at the worsted wool operation will move to the nearby yarn spinning plant.
