Mohawk Backing Facility Downsizing

Waynesboro, VA, Aug. 20, 2009--Mohawk is scaling back at its Waynesboro carpet backing facility due to market conditions, according to published reports.

An employee at the Mohawk plant told a television station that up to 40 workers will be laid off by Friday.

The employee said management met Monday to discuss the reductions, which will be added to layoffs that occurred in January. Those earlier layoffs left 75 people without jobs

Waynesboro Councilwoman Lorie Smith confirmed the report Wednesday.

According to another source familiar with the layoffs, the company will have about 120 workers remaining at its Waynesboro facility.

Mohawk will also shut down two of the plant's machines, Smith said.
