Milliken To Cut Workforce Worldwide
Spartanburg, SC, Feb. 25, 2009--Milliken & Co. said Tuesday it will lay off about 650 employees, or 6.5 percent of its work force, because of worsening economic conditions.
The company said the job cuts would be spread across its 47 locations worldwide.
Milliken said in a statement that the company did “everything we could to avoid arriving at this point, such as temporary stop-offs and rotating people out at our various manufacturing locations on a weekly basis, but at some point in time you have to bring some stability to your core work force.”
In December, the Milliken offered voluntary retirement packages to eligible management employees in a restructuring to deal with current conditions and future economic projections.
At the time, the company said it also would consolidate other positions, affecting fewer than 100 employees.
