Milliken Releases Third Sustainability Report

Spartanburg, SC, November 1, 2017-Milliken announces the release of its third annual global sustainability report.

Entitled “The Intersection of Ethics and Transparency,” the report dives into how ethics plays an integral role in underpinning Milliken’s actions as an environmental steward and champion of science-based, sustainable practices.

The report explores Milliken’s work in material transparency, highlighting significant initiatives to improve how the company shares the environmental and material health performance of its flooring solutions. Milliken explains more about programs measuring and tracking biodiversity and environmental impacts through life cycle assessment, elaborates on the company’s approach to material transparency with third-party partnerships, and reports resource consumption data for operations in 2016.

Redefining Sustainability Through Ethics and Transparency

As a more than decade-long recipient of Ethisphere Institute’s World’s Most Ethical Companies designation, Milliken keenly understands its role in promoting ethics and transparency within the flooring industry. Through this latest sustainability report, Milliken provides a deeper level of insight into its approach to acting ethically and being transparent by:

* Using resources responsibly, and publicly reporting resource consumption

* Taking action to reduce environmental impact, and communicating their role in doing so

* Conducting global business reputably

* Being an employer of choice, and sharing employment practices and metrics

* Creating products with the environment in mind, and verifying their environmental performance

* Designing flooring solutions with human health in mind, and providing the human health performance data of Milliken flooring solutions

* Working to resolve conflicts between environmentally preferable products with questionable human health impacts, and vice versa

* Partnering with suppliers who adhere to and behave with similar ethical behavior, and demanding traceability and transparency in their supply chain

* Maintaining open lines of communication for feedback

Advancing Our Planet Purposefully and Ethically

“The Intersection of Ethics & Transparency” also denotes Milliken’s specific sustainability related achievements in operations during 2016, including resource reduction and elevated supplier material transparency.

Stewarding the environment includes continual efforts to reduce resource consumption and carbon emissions. Even during a year of advanced growth, Milliken saw year-over-year reductions in a number of key metrics, including:

  • Scope 1 carbon emission reductions of 2.09%, and Scope 2 emissions of 0.4%
  • Energy use reduction of 6.5%
  • Water consumption reduction of 51.6%
  • Waste reduction of 14.75%

Milliken also underwent a year-long process to pilot a new LEED v4 MR credit, Building Product Disclosure and Optimization - Material Ingredients (Option 3). The next tier of material transparency, this stringent credit option dives into the chemical makeup of supplier materials for an elevated understanding of their resulting human and environmental health impacts.

Through its annual sustainability report, Milliken hopes to drive forthright conversations to build a dialogue in how purposeful flooring solutions contribute to our daily lives. To read the full report, visit the Sustainability tab of millikenfloors.com.
