Milliken Receives Best Recycling Award

Spartanburg, SC, May 18, 2007--Milliken & Company has been presented with the Business Recycling Program Award for its extensive and comprehensive recycling initiatives.  The award was presented by the Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) at their annual meeting in Greenville, S.C.   The purpose of the award is to recognize a business that has implemented an outstanding waste reduction/recycling program and integrated recycling into its business operation.

 

In accepting the award Mike Baird, Milliken’s director of solid waste, said, “Milliken has put in place an aggressive recycling program with an ultimate goal of zero waste generation.  This award is wonderful recognition of the emphasis all of our associates place on the important issue of sustainability.”

 

The CRA represents both North Carolina and South Carolina and criteria for the award is specific.  Environmental leadership must be an integral part of the business with a focus on waste reduction and recycling issues.  There must be a commitment to sustainable practices which also includes education and promotion as a component.  The company must also buy recycled content as part of its purchasing objectives.

 

“The results Milliken has attained speaks volumes about their commitment to sustainable practices,” said Kerry Krumsiek, executive director of the Carolina Recycling Association.  “Milliken is a true role model for other companies in environmental stewardship.”

  

The recycling processes Milliken has implemented have resulted in less than 1% of the Company’s solid waste stream being landfilled.  Additionally, 38 of Milliken’s domestic locations, including Milliken Floor Covering plants in LaGrange, sent zero waste to landfills in 2006.  Milliken has also reduced its water usage by over half since 1991.
