Spartanburg, SC, October 11, 2006--Milliken & Co. has joined the SmartWay Transportation Partnership, a voluntary collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry, as a truck carrier.
The purpose of the program is to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
Backed by third-party energy audits, Milliken has tracked energy and fuel use since 1971. It has reduced energy use as much as 30 percent annually for the past 15 years.
Goals include safety as well as energy efficiency. The company's accident rate per million miles is 88 percent below the national average. Milliken's private truck fleet has won national and state recognition for its safety record with a fleet of drivers averaging 5.5 million miles per year.
