Milliken Earth Run Raises Environmental Awareness
Spartanburg, SC, March 22, 2007--Milliken & Company will sponsor the annual 5K Earth Run and Corporate Shield event on Saturday, March 24, at the Roger Milliken Center Arboretum in Spartanburg. The international manufacturer, which recycles more than 99 percent of solid waste worldwide, encourages environmental stewardship with the event, while runners experience the rare all-grass course and nature-inspired trophies.“Coaches describe this course looping through our corporate grounds—a nationally recognized arboretum—as one of the finest in the Southeast, which is frequently used for numerous high school and collegiate competitive events,” noted race director and Milliken associate Mike Baird.
Winners for the 2007 Earth Run will be presented renewable carpet tiles printed using Milliken’s Millitron technology. Past trophies have included river rocks, sand sculptures, candles, and cross-sections of a fallen cedar tree that contributed more than five dozen awards. There will also be a demo model of Liquidlogic’s new kayak made from Milliken’s new lightweight MFT composite material.
“Incredibly, Milliken landfills less than 1% of its waste worldwide and demonstrates sustainable practices through a focus on recycling and elimination of wasteful processes,” said Richard Dillard, Milliken’s director of public affairs. “It is this type of corporate philosophy that has contributed to Milliken being named one of FORTUNE magazine’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For,’” added Dillard.
Earth Run is one of a series of Corporate Shield Spartanburg-area events in which scoring is based on team participation with an emphasis on fitness and friendly competition. The event starts at 9:00 am, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. near the Helipad. The first 200 entrants receive a Milliken Visa Endurance Technical Shirt. The proprietary technology combines long-lasting, effective odor control and excellent moisture management in a wide range of performance apparel fabrics.
There will be a colorful photo-op near the large American flag as the runners loop by the fountains and duck ponds. More information is available through the Greenville Track Club or by calling Mike Baird at (864)503-1978. Race forms may be downloaded at www.milliken.com/earthrun.
