Mannington Turns Carpet Tile Scrap Into Resilient

Calhoun, GA, June 7--Mannington Commercial takes the lead in the race to find environmentally-sound solutions for the reuse of industrial materials with the introduction of Relay. This groundbreaking homogeneous sheet flooring, a true first of its kind, is manufactured using 40% pre-consumer (post-industrial) recycled content to produce Relay, a flooring solution that uses carpet tile trim waste. The production of Mannington’s modular carpet tiles generates strips of excess material called "frame scrap" when the tiles are punched out of larger sheets of carpet. The "frame scrap" is sent through a grinding process which produces a mixture of fluff from the carpet face and chunks from the carpet backing. This mixture is heated and pressurized into dense, cord-shaped pieces that are colored and ground into chips. The chips are then used in place of virgin raw materials to produce the color pellets used to make Relay. Relay is manufactured in the company's third party certified facility, which meets all ISO 9001 Quality Standards and ISO 14001 Environmental Standards. Mannington technology breakthroughs include a new low-maintenance coating requiring polish only at exterior doors and high-traffic areas and a new and unique curing process for the urethane wear layer that enhances the stain and soil repellent properties. The deeply saturated, "retro" color palette of Relay is offered in 6’ width with 16 colorations, all suitable for use in the healthcare market segment as well as education, retail, hospitality, government housing and corporate offices.
