José Durán Wins Tile of Spain Award

Castellón, Spain, December 5, 2007—José Durán Fernández’s “Colour Revolution” project took first place in the architecture category of the 6th Tiles of Spain Awards of Architecture and Interior Design.

The project, led by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, involved a re-design of San Vicente Street in Burriana (Castellón), in which ceramic tiles, their brightness and colour are a major feature.

First prize in the interior design category was awarded to the “San Blas (Madrid) Municipal Health Centre”, by Estudio Entresitio. The project won the prize for “coherence in the use of materials outside and inside, including ceramic tile as a mirror to reflect the light through patios and skylights.”

In the Degree Projects Category first prize went to the “C_DAC-Contemporary Architecture Documentation Centre” by Sergio Bruns Banegas. The jury said it was struck by “the fact that the urban setting determined the project’s strategy, in which ceramic tile is used in a way that is consistent with its urban setting. The project’s inventiveness and daring was also highly valued.”

Honorable Mention went to “The Palencia Law Courts”, by Isabel García Vázquez. The main feature of this project, jury pointed out, is that it is “a disquieting assemblage of boxes where the quality of the ceramic tiles and the light guide the viewer and give order to the labyrinth.”

The prize money in the architecture category is 20,000 Euros, as it is in the interior design category, whilse the winner of the Degree Projects category wins 10,000 Euros.

Roughly 100 projects were entered for the sixth competition.
