Iran Rug Offical Stress Industry Potential

London, England, August 17, 2006--A senior Iranian rug industry official said that the government must support the weavers, stressing that the development of Persian carpet sector will not only prevent migrations from rural areas to larger cities but will also help create jobs, according to IranMania. According to ISNA, Morteza Faraji, who heads the National Persian Carpet Center, told the Yazd Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines that the industry could develop well both at home and abroad, adding that Iran accounts for 41 % of the global carpet trade. “One square meter of Persian rugs is woven for every 50 people in Iran,“ he said, adding that there are great potentials for expanding the market internationally. Faraji said earlier that several Persian carpet research and marketing groups will reportedly be established nationwide as part of efforts to promote international sales of the luxurious handicraft. He said the groups will try to obtain information about the preferences and needs of international customers of Persian rugs. Iran accounts for $500 million of the total global carpet trade of $1.4 billion a year. Over 200,000 carpet weavers are active nationwide.
