Iran Rug Exports Hit $388M in 9 Months

Tehran, Iran, January 10, 2007--Hand-woven rugs worth approximately $388 million were exported to the U.S. and European countries during the first nine months of the current year (Iranian calendar year started March 21, 2006) according to Mehr News.com Exports of the Persian rugs in the past year amounted to $480 million, the chairman of National Iranian Carpet Center Morteza Faraji announced, adding the figure is expected to hit $500 million by the end of the current year. National Iranian Carpet Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce is planning to take a number of measures aimed at changing the downturn in the Persian carpet’s world markets. We are trying to change the current trend in a positive way, he stated. In light of the measures taken, we expect an upward trend worldwide in Persian rug business by the end of the current year, he reiterated. So far, we have identified ten target countries for Persian rug exports, he stipulated, adding that National Iranian Carpet Center is planning to begin negotiations with foreign marketing companies to that end.
