Iowa Senator Harkin Showcases Bio-Based Products f

Washington, DC, June 7--At an event in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington today Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) aims to educate fellow members of Congress, their staff, and federal contractors about biobased products made from renewable agricultural materials, according to AgricultureOnline. Harkin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, says many of the featured products can replace conventional products often derived from petroleum. New products and technologies will be on display from vendors around the country, including soybased ink, carpet and plastics made of corn, building panels made of wheat and rice, and cleaning solutions made from soybean plants. Harkin has advocated making the Capitol complex and the federal government a leader in the transition to products using home-grown renewable materials. He says the biobased products can improve America's economy while reducing our dependence on foreign oil and improving the environment. The event is being sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Soybean Association, Environmental and Energy Study Institute, National Corn Growers Association and the National Farmers Union.
