Interior Design Show Offers a Host of Unique Featu

Toronto, Ontario, January 12--When the Interior Design Show (IDS) takes place at the National Trade Centre in Toronto from February 10 - 13, 2005, show attendees can experience everything from the futuristic "non-conformist" custom designed digital wall coverings of Grenville Design to the classic beauty of Nostalgic Wood Inc., a company that dismantles century old timber buildings and reworks the wood into unique flooring. Brand new for 2005 is Prototype: Design Ideas for the Home, showcasing full-scale, cutting-edge concepts of furniture, lighting and housewares by leading and emerging Canadians. The show will feature more than 250 exhibitors; special feature exhibits including La Cucina (focusing on kitchen concepts and design), Exterior Design (dedicated to the art of landscape design); and a line up of internationally celebrated speakers. "The Interior Design Show illustrates the many facets of residential design," says Dov Goldstein, Show Director. "The show will feature exciting new products and innovative ideas from Canadian, American and international exhibitors." The Interior Design Show kicks off on Thursday, February 10th with a gala event for five thousand people, presented by Canadian House & Home and Mercedes-Benz Canada. The Art Gallery of Ontario is the evening's official charitable partner. Guest of Honour Lady Weinberg, Anouska Hempel, who designed the world's first luxury "boutique" hotel, Blakes London, will officially open the show. Lady Weinberg has also designed the minimalist Hempel Hotel, the East-meets-West Blakes Amsterdam, and a hotel and spa in the Brazilian rainforest. Prior to the gala, media are invited to preview the show beginning at 12 p.m. Media will have the opportunity to experience the show, as well as the highly anticipated concept spaces. Participating firms Saucier & Perrotte, Hudson Kruse, the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design - University of Toronto, and a joint project by ALSOP & Partners and Brown & Storey will explore the concept of "Material" by creating a space that acts as a "safe haven against the chaos." Each team has a different interpretation of how such a haven is fashioned. 3rd UNCLE design has been named the Interior Design Show's Designer of the Year. John Tong, Arriz Hassam and Paul Syme of 3rd UNCLE design have developed projects spanning a range of categories, including the award-winning Drake Hotel, workplace designs for MAC Cosmetics and Shift Magazine, retail spaces such as Lululemon Athletica, and residential custom homes and lofts. 3rd UNCLE design has been the recipient of many prestigious design awards, including best concept design from the Industrial Design Society of America and the Best of Canada design award. A special installation of 3rd UNCLE design's work will be featured at the show. The show's Trade Day, which is open to Trade professionals only, will take place on February 11th. Winy Maas, principal architect at elite Netherlands design firm MVRDV whose work is admired by design aficionado Brad Pitt, will be speaking, along with Stephen and Michael Maharam of leading New York-based contract textile supplier Maharam. Brazilian design team Fernando and Humberto Campana will also appear; the duo is known for taking disparate concepts and materials and putting them together to create something new, much like the way they see diverse people and influences come together in Brazil. The popular Design Talks weekend speaker series will be held on February 12th and 13th. The Saturday portion of the weekend speaker series is hosted by Canadian House & Home and HGTV's Lynda Reeves, and will focus on the "culture of the kitchen" - food, entertaining and design.
