Interface’s Anderson Plays the Good Guy
Atlanta, GA, July 13— The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s recent headline says "Interface CEO Plays Good Guy in Finance Flick." It goes on to say that the latest movie that bashes big, bad business is a Canadian documentary, "The Corporation." According to Business Week (July 19), the film argues "that companies fit the clinical definition of psychopaths: self-absorbed, deceptive, incapable of maintaining enduring relationships." Fortunately, Ray Anderson, chief executive of Atlanta-based Interface, is in the film to add some balance. Interface, the world's largest maker of carpet tile, has a history of environment-friendly practices and is one of the film's good guys. The film, which won an award at the Sundance Film Festival, also says that companies are unsustainable "doom machines" that create great wealth but also great harm. Anderson tells Business Week that the filmmakers "had a thesis and used extreme examples to prove it." Still, he says CEOs ought to see it.
