Interface Congratulates California on Global Warmi
Oakland, CA, September 1, 2006--The Climate Group, Interface, Inc., and the Timberland Company are among the companies thanking the California State Legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for reaching an agreement on legislation to combat global warming. The legislation, called AB 32, will be known as The California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 when signed into law. It sets a statewide cap on greenhouse gas emissions and will enable the state to move forward with developing a market-based system that makes California a world leader in the effort to reduce carbon emissions. "We congratulate the California legislature and the governor for working together to reach this important agreement," said Nancy Skinner, U.S. director of The Climate Group, the only nonprofit organization working internationally to bring business and government together to solve global warming. On July 31st The Climate Group convened the Climate and Energy Roundtable with Prime Minister Tony Blair, Governor Schwarzenegger, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and 15 business leaders to discuss how business and government could work together to address global warming and accelerate the transition to a low carbon future. "The Climate Group commends California for this decisive action that will cap California's greenhouse gas emissions and establish a clear path for the use of market and other mechanisms," said Skinner. Business leaders also expressed their congratulations. "As a global manufacturer with our Bentley Prince Street business in California, I am excited by this effort. This legislation clearly provides for the use of market and other mechanisms to bring emissions down to 25% below 1990 levels," said Daniel T. Hendrix, president and CEO, Interface, Inc. "We look forward to working with state agencies and other stakeholders in the implementation of this groundbreaking bill." "The State of California just raised the bar on reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said Jeff Swartz, president and CEO, The Timberland Company. "This agreement provides a necessary platform for cross sector collaboration between the state, business and consumers, which is key to addressing the global warming crisis." The Climate Group is a nonprofit organization with offices in San Francisco, New York, London and Melbourne that communicates the business case for solutions to climate change and mobilizes corporate and government leaders to take decisive action to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy.
