Initial Jobless Claims Rose by 21,000 in Week Ending August 5

Washington, DC, August 10, 2023-In the week ending August 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 248,000, an increase of 21,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 227,000, according to the Department of Labor. 

The four-week moving average was 231,000, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 228,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1% for the week ending July 29, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 29 was 1,684,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 8,000 from 1,700,000 to 1,692,000. The four-week moving average was 1,701,000, a decrease of 9,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 2,000 from 1,712,250 to 1,710,250.
