Initial Jobless Claims Higher Than Expected

Washington, DC, Jan. 13, 2011 -- Initial jobless claims rose to the highest level since October, the Labor Department reported.

Claims rose by 35,000 to 445,000. Economists expected 410,000 filings. The average number of applications over the past four weeks, a less-volatile gauge, increased to 416,500.
