New Delhi, India, May 18, 2007--Carpet exports from India to the US grew 27% touch Rs 1,537.51 crore during fiscal year 2005-06 from Rs 1,203.11 crore in 2002-03, industry chamber Assocham today said, according to a report in Press Trust of India.
The chamber said the continent is still expected to fuel the growth of the industry in near future in spite of a decline in carpet exports to major European countries.
Exports to Europe, which saw a major downfall during 2002-03 and 2003-04, showed signs of recovery in 2004-05, Assocham said in a statement.
The chamber said, apart from the US, major markets in Europe such as Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and UK prefer to buy Indian carpets due to their high quality and price competitiveness.
"Our carpet exports to Italy have gone up from Rs 29.16 crore in 2002-03 to Rs 38.5 crore in 2005-06 and is likely to exceed Rs 50 crore by the end of this fiscal in view of growing demand and rising appetite for Indian carpets," Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot said.
As many as 1,215 carpet manufacturing units are operational in the country with only 190 of them in the organised sector, the chamber said.
