Indian Government Calls for Carpet Industry to Add

Varanasi, India, October 17, 2005—The Indian government has called for technology-aided value addition to the quality of carpets manufactured in Varanasi-Mirzapur-Bhadohi belt so that the internationally-acclaimed products could continue to compete in the global markets amid stiff competition from other Asian countries like China and Iran, according to Press Trust of India. "The carpet manufacturers must ensure value addition to their products by optimally utilising the latest technology so that their products could not only continue to be competitive in the global market, but also increase the volume of export to the foreign countries," Union Textiles minister Shankar Sinh Vaghela told reporters here today. Inagurating a three-day 'India Carpet Expo' here, Vaghela said his ministry had undertaken several measures to boost the carpet industry, including setting up of a Indian Institute of Carpet Technology in Bhadohi district and was planning to set up a Special Economic Zone for the industry here. There was a also a provision for financial assistance to the carpet manufacturers for upgrading their machineries by purchasing latest equipments, he said. Nearly 106 exhibitors are showcasing their products at the ongoing fair and expecting to receive business worth Rs 100 crore, organisers of the exhibition said.
