Indian Exporters Demand Carpet Processing Zone

Bhadohi, India, January 30, 2006--Carpet exporters and traders are planning to meet the union textiles minister demanding setting up of a special 'carpet processing zone' at Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, according to New Kerala.com. All-India Carpet Manufacturers' Union president Shaukat Ali Ansari said here today the zone would cater to the large number of carpet exporting units in Bhadohi and Mirzapur districts. Welcoming the setting up of a special economic zone (SEZ) here, Mr Ansari, however, said it could not ameliorate the challenges faced by the carpet industry. ''SEZ provides services related to sales tax, income tax and customs fee under one roof, but the carpet business is spread far and wide in this region,'' he maintained. He claimed the SEZ could prove beneficial for big exporters, but small time traders, weavers and labourers associated with the industry stand to gain nothing unless a special carpet processing zone was established.
