IIDA Design Competition Winners Announced

Chicago, IL, March 21, 2006--The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announced the winners of its 2006 interior design competitions, the 33rd Annual Interior Design Competition and the 14th Annual Will Ching Design Competition. Winners were chosen from among hundreds of projects submitted from interior design firms around the world. Awards may not be given every year. Five winners were selected in the 33rd Annual Interior Design Competition selected from projects in the following practice areas: Commercial, Government, Healthcare & Institutional, Hospitality, Residential and Retail. 1. Project: Brown Thomas & Co., Dublin, Ireland. Firm: burdifilek, Toronto, Ontario 2. Project: Top of the Rock, New York, NY. Firm: Gabellini Sheppard Associates, LLP, New York, NY 3. Project: Nobu Fifty Seven, New York, NY. Firm: Rockwell Group, New York, NY 4. Project: Global Hyatt Corporate Headquarters, Chicago, IL Firm: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, Chicago, IL 5. Project: Substance Studio, Des Moines, IA. Firm: Substance, LLC, Des Moines, IA In addition, Huvafen Fushi Resort—Republic of Maldives designed by C+C Studio, Singapore was chosen as the winner of the 14th Annual Will Ching Design Competition, which honors outstanding commercial design by firms of five or fewer individuals. This year’s design firm is the recipient of a $3,000 cash award sponsored by Mannington Commercial. All winning projects will be featured in the NeoCon issue of Interior Design Magazine, the publishing partner for the competition. Judges for the distinguished competition included Clara Igonda, CNI design (Los Angeles); Kenneth Baker, Associate IIDA (Washington, DC); S. Russell Groves, S. Russell Groves (New York); and Adrian Wilson, Interior Photography (New York). John Mack, IIDA’s vice president of communications served as the facilitator for the judging which took place February 24-25, 2006 in Chicago. “The winners represent a wide range of project types. Though very different, they exhibit the common belief that good design is not only the execution of a strong idea, but possesses a lyrical quality that transcends the idea, turning the project into something that is truly unique,” Mack said. The Best of Competition will be announced and all winners will be honored at Cool 2006, IIDA’s NeoCon Gala, Monday, June 12th at the Westin Chicago River North.
