IICRC Technician Educates Consumers on Radio Show

Vancouver, WA, September 7--While Jeff Bishop, Technical Advisor of the IICRC, spends much of his time teaching and training professionals in the cleaning and restoration industry, he also speaks to consumers about the same issues that affect them and their homes. Bishop’s consumer advocacy includes guest appearances on the Home Innovations radio program, a weekly show that airs on the ABC-owned station, WMAL, in Washington, D.C. The program is designed to serve as a forum for consumers to both learn and ask questions about various topics related to restoration and remodeling. Bishop spoke to listeners about water damage restoration back in November 2004; last month he was on the show again to talk about fire damage restoration. “Many consumers are not aware of what they should do after disaster occurs, such as a flood or fire,” said Bishop. “It’s not because they are unconcerned about protecting themselves and their families, but it’s just that they don’t think about restoration until a disaster already has happened. But if they know what to do before disaster strikes, they will be more likely to act quickly and correctly, which means a better chance for full recovery from the damage.” Bishop also urged listeners to learn about the effects of a fire, which can help them, as property owners, accurately evaluate the damage to their home or business and minimize the need for unnecessarily costly repairs. He also reinforced the need to hire an IICRC-Certified Firm that is trained in fire, smoke and odor damage restoration. “As an industry, we must focus more on consumer advocacy,” said Bishop. “The more we educate consumers, the more likely they will be to demand a higher standard of excellence and professionalism, which is imperative if we wish to maintain our credibility as an industry.” Both segments are available for listening by visiting the IICRC consumer website at www.certifiedcleaners.org. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a non-profit certifying body for the flooring inspection, cleaning, and disaster (fire, water, odor) restoration industries. Organized in 1972, the IICRC currently represents more than 3,600 Certified Firms and more than 37,000 Certified Technicians in 30 countries. The IICRC, with participation from the entire industry, sets standards for inspection, cleaning and disaster restoration. IICRC also serves as a consumer referral source for Certified Firms and Inspectors (800) 835-4624 or www.certifiedcleaners.org.
