Home Depot Opens Second Manhattan Store

Atlanta, GA, December 16--Home Depot will open its second Manhattan store today. The 108,000 square feet location, at Third Avenue between 58th and 59th streets, is multi-level store and similar to the company's 23rd Street store with its breadth of merchandise and services. The store offers daily how-to clinics, a concierge and same-day delivery. In the new Midtown store, shoppers will find a unique offering of high-end decor items and expanded customer services, like custom closet design and the largest tool center in Manhattan. Additionally, the 59th Street store differentiates itself with a "virtual apartment" in the lobby, a 1,400-square-foot, three-dimensional space exhibiting project-based, real-life expressions in a mock one bedroom apartment. "The new 59th Street store embodies the spirit of Manhattan and is designed to inspire our customers by helping them see the potential to improve their urban spaces," said Tom Taylor, Eastern Division president of The Home Depot. "Even with the success of the 23rd Street store under our belt, it is important that we continue to innovate in our stores and bring our products to life in new and exciting ways. The 'virtual apartment' lobby gives The Home Depot an opportunity to showcase our most innovative and distinctive products in a way that is relevant." In celebration of grand opening weekend, the virtual apartment will become an "urban theater" and feature two actors playing the role of a young, apartment-dwelling couple today through Monday. The "homeowners" will perform a series of projects and renovations on the pre-war styled apartment, including plastering, painting, and installing lighting fixtures, wood floors, tile and marble. All products and know-how featured in the demonstrations are available at the store. The Home Depot's second Manhattan location is custom built for the borough's residents and caters to the neighborhood located in upper Midtown. The store contains exclusive specialty items including high-end cabinetry imported from Italy and designer window dressings. The store also builds on the current offerings at 23rd Street with an expanded one-of-a-kind rug selection, the biggest lighting showroom of any The Home Depot store in the country and 11 paint-mixing stations, as well as an expanded Ralph Lauren paint center. "The success we've achieved at the 23rd Street store location has been unprecedented," remarked Taylor. "Given that, there is just no limit to what we can achieve with the new store at 59th Street. This is very exciting for The Home Depot." The new store will offer delivery throughout Manhattan, locksmith services and an expanded Customer Care Center. To accommodate the clientele in the area, the store has expanded its design services to include interior project designers, kitchen and bath designers and specially modeled customer-centered conference rooms for design consultations. Free how-to clinics will be offered three times each day. In addition, four "Know-How" kiosks located throughout the store will enable customers to identify projects and print step-by-step instructions and a shopping list of needed project materials. Store hours are from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Home Depot currently operates 16 stores with approximately 3,900 associates in the New York City boroughs. The Home Depot's two Manhattan locations are among a growing number of stores that the company has merchandised and formatted for urban environments. The company opened its first urban format store in the Lincoln Park section of Chicago in 2003 and recently opened a store in Park Royal, West Vancouver, British Columbia.
