GoodWeave Holds 'One in a Million' Campaign
New York, NY, June 9, 2011 -- On June 12, World Day against Child Labor, the nonprofit GoodWeave celebrates the progress it has made through its partners in the fight against child labor.
June 12 marks the adoption of the landmark International Labor Organization Convention No. 182, which addresses the need for action against worst forms of child labor, to include carpet work.
“On World Day against Child Labor, GoodWeave recognizes its partners in the One in a Million awareness campaign,” said Nina Smith, executive director of GoodWeave USA.
“The campaign informs consumers about the problem of child servitude and offers a viable solution in which they can take part.”
The One in a Million campaign draws its inspiration from the estimated one million children exploited in the carpet-making industry when GoodWeave began in 1994, and the one million or more knots that go into each handcrafted rug.
The campaign’s partners range from GoodWeave’s media sponsors, who donate approximately a half million dollars annually in advertising space, to more than 80 North American rug company members, who comply with GoodWeave’s strictly monitored no-child-labor standard and make a contribution to help GoodWeave provide education and other opportunities for thousands of former child laborers and those at risk of servitude.
To commemorate the occasion, GoodWeave is co-hosting a special presentation with GoodWeave partner and premiere rug company Lapchi and GoodWeave media sponsor interiors on June 14 in Lapchi’s Chicago showroom on social and environment responsibility in design.
GoodWeave has helped reduce the incidence of child labor in South Asia’s rug industry by an estimated 75 percent.
