Georgia Trucker Killed During Apparent Carpet Heis

Dallas, July 27--A Georgia truck driver was fatally shot Monday while defending his wife from an apparent holdup at a rest stop. Police identified the trucker as Steve Sutton, 44, of Calhoun, Ga. Authorities said Sutton and his wife were sleeping in their truck cab when as many as four people confronted them before dawn at the truck stop along Interstate 20. Police Sgt. Gary Kirkpatrick said Sutton tried to push one or more of the suspects away when one opened fire, hitting him several times. Kirkpatrick said Sutton managed to drive the truck across the street to a fast food restaurant parking lot, where he died. Sutton's employer, Georgia-based 7 Hills Transport, said he was hauling carpet from Georgia to Dallas. "We miss him," company president Lyons Heyman said. "Right now we want to focus on what happened."
