January 25, 2006, Marietta, GA--Mr. Robert F. Docherty, age 84, a 28 year resident of Marietta, GA formerly of Cold Spring, NY died Friday, January 19, 2007. Mr. Docherty was born and raised in Cornwall, NY, the son of Samuel and Catherine Martin Docherty. He attended Syracuse University and was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, where he was discharged as a First Lieutenant, flight instructor.
Mr. Docherty retired after a 34 year career with Monsanto. He was one of the primary forces behind the origination of carpeting in schools. Mr. Docherty also designed the program which established the use of carpeting in health care facilities and was responsible for the first installation of carpet in hospital patient areas. The Solutia "DOC" award was named for Mr. Docherty. It recognizes his life-long and continued contributions to the contract carpet market. The award recognizes outstanding achievements of interior design professionals in the commercial building industry.
An avid golfer, Mr. Docherty was a member and past board member of the Atlanta Country Club. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. Mr. Docherty is survived by his wife, Susan R. Docherty; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Patricia Docherty of White Plains, NY; his grandchildren, Caitlin and Robert Docherty and his brother and sister-in-law, Edward M. and Barbara Docherty of Ashville, NC. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, January 23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Msgr. James J. Fennessy, celebrant. The family will receive friends Monday evening, January 22 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Patterson's Arlington Chapel.
