Former Mohawk Executive Dies in Charleston

Charleston, SC, March 16, 2009--Robert Saunders, 91, died in Charleston, S.C. on Dec. 24.

Saunders had a long career in the flooring industry starting with Mohawk Industries prior to World War II. After serving in the war, Saunders resumed his career with Mohawk and served as president of two Mohawk Industries' subsidiaries in the 1950s.

According to Mac Ryland, a long-time business associate, Saunders built the first large Southern carpet mills for Mohawk - the Dixiana Mills in Dillon, S.C. and the Oak River plant in Bennettsville, S.C.
 
Saunders retired in 1982 as vice-president with the Atlanta office of Kurt Salmon Associates, an international consultancy for retail and healthcare facilities.
