Floors Using New Adhesive Ready Immediately
Chattanooga, TN, July 16, 2009--A Chattanooga-based company has developed a flooring adhesive that CEO Fred Land called a potential “game-changer” for the industry, according to a story in the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
The product, from Interlock Industries, is made at Interlock’s factory in Chatsworth, Ga. The "eco-adhesive" branded as Spray-Lock, allows a floor to be used immediately after it's installed.
“It’s not often you get to come along and change an industry,” Land told the newspaper.
The spray adhesive is described as safe enough to eat, and it worked well enough to attract Wal-Mart as its first customer three years ago.
Instead of the putty-like mastic adhesives widely used to install carpet and vinyl and ceramic tile, Interlock’s adhesive is sprayed on and dries instantly. The bond is strong enough that heavy equipment could be driven on the flooring immediately.
The company recently moved its corporate offices from Chatsworth to Chattanooga.
Wal-Mart now uses the product in all of its new stores across the country. If a contractor who is using the Spray-Lock product to install flooring needs help, someone from the company can quickly fly out to solve the problem.
In October, the company will begin selling a similar product specifically for residential use. That product will be available in a home center.
Interlock is working toward getting a Green Seal certification.
Spray-Lock uses 85 percent less adhesive than other traditional types of flooring products, and in just one year, Wal-Mart saved 3.6 million pounds of glue by using Interlock products, according to the company.
