Feltex To Revise Coal Burning Policy

Christchurch, NZ, Sept. 28--Carpet manufacturer Feltex has revised its position on plans to burn coal at its Riccarton factory. Residents have told consent hearings they are opposed to the proposal because of the pollution it would cause. Feltex General Manager Ian Barbour says the company is prepared to accept stricter conditions concerning the sulphur content of the coal and will accept a reduction in the consent period from 35 to 26 years. He says Feltex has listened to what residents have had to say and is trying to alleviate their concerns. The carpet maker has previously suggested it could move its factory offshore if it does not get permission to burn coal.
