EPA Close to Taking Action Against DuPont Over PFO

Washington, June 30--The EPA is close to deciding whether DuPont kept back health information from the government about perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is used to make fluoropolymers, according to Asia Intelligence Wire. The EPA expects to take formal action against the company soon. The agency is actively investigating alleged violations by DuPont for failure to report health-related information regarding PFOA. The agency first revealed in Apr 2003 that it was investigating DuPont for allegedly not disclosing that PFOA was present in drinking water near its plant in Parkersburg, WV, and that some pregnant women who worked at the plant had the chemical in their umbilical cords. The EPA is also engaged in a separate, broad-based review of how the chemical should be regulated. DuPont says it followed all reporting requirements of the Toxic Substances Control Act. The company said there is no scientific evidence to suggest that PFOA is harmful to human health or the environment.
