Durable Goods Orders Rose 16.4% in May

Washington, DC, June 26, 2025-New orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up five of the last six months, increased $48.3 billion or 16.4% to $343.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This followed a 7.6% March increase. This followed a 6.6% April decrease.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 15.5%. Transportation equipment, also up five of the last six, drove the decrease, $47.4 billion or 48.3% to $145.4 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in April, up six consecutive months, increased $0.6 billion or 0.2% to $301 billion. This followed a 0.3% April increase. Transportation equipment, up five of the last six months, drove the increase, $0.3 billion or 0.3% to $98 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up ten of the last eleven months, increased $47.6 billion or 3.4% to $1,455.3 billion. This followed a virtually unchanged April decrease. Transportation equipment, up three consecutive months, drove the increase, $47.5 billion or 5.6% to $897.8 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in May, up eight consecutive months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.2% to $587.8 billion. This followed a 0.1% April increase. Machinery, up three consecutive months, led the increase, $47.5 billion or 5.6% to $897.8 billion.
