Durable Goods Orders Declined 6.3% in April

Washington, DC, May 27, 2025-New orders for manufactured durable goods in April, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $19.9 billion or 6.3% to $296.3 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This followed a 7.6% March increase. 

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.2%. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 7.5%. Transportation equipment, also down following four consecutive monthly increases, drove the decrease, $20.3 billion or 17.1% to $98.8 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in April, up five consecutive months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.4% to $300.6 billion. This followed a 0.2% March increase. Transportation equipment, up four of the last five months, drove the increase, $1.4 billion or 1.4% to $97.8 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up eleven of the last twelve months, increased $0.6 billion or virtually unchanged to $1,408.5 billion. This followed a 1.6% March increase. Transportation equipment, up two consecutive months, drove the increase, $1.0 billion or 0.1% to $850.9 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in April, up seven consecutive months, increased $0.9 billion or 0.1% to $586.7 billion. This followed a 0.1% March increase. Transportation equipment, up five of the last six months, led the increase, $0.3 billion or 0.1% to $188.5 billion.
