Greensboro, NC, June 18--An arbitration panel awarded about $16 million in damages to DuPont Co. in its arbitration case with Unifi Inc. over their manufacturing alliance, Unifi said.
In March, the arbitration panel determined that Unifi hadn't substantially breached its pact with DuPont. A year ago, DuPont alleged breach of contract and sought arbitration and $85 million in damages from Unifi, claiming Unifi hadn't lived up to its obligation to buy all of the filament it needed from DuPont until the plants covered by the manufacturing alliance were running at full capacity. Unifi and DuPont integrated their manufacturing of polyester filament, a raw material for polyester, in June 2000.
