Dow's Lomax Gets Lifecycle Assessment, Wins Award

Midland, MI, Dec. 3, 2009--Dow Chemical's Lomax technology has been third party reviewed by an independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study, conducted by the University of Stuttgart.

In addition, this alternative energy program has been given a Responsible Care Award.

Named for its focus on delivering materials with lower environmental impact, but maximum performance, Lomax uses methane gas collected from a Dalton, Ga., landfill to manufacture Dow’s latex carpet backing.

The lifecycle analysis determined that Lomax reduces the footprint of Dow’s latex carpet backings by 25 percent.

“Gaining this third party LCA approval to validate the significant reduction in our carbon footprint is extremely valuable as we continue highlighting the benefits of Lomax Technology,” says Todd Crook, Dow global commercial director, carpet and performance latex.

The system, which was introduced at Dow’s Emulsion Polymers plant in Dalton in June 2008, is estimated to deliver environmental benefits equivalent to saving the amount of energy needed to heat 2,000 U.S. homes annually or keeping 13,500 cars off the road each year.

It’s these benefits that also earned the technology a 2009 Responsible Care Award from the American Chemistry Council.
