Contractor's Carpet Recycling Helps Win Large Job

Grapevine, TX, July 7, 2008--When American Airlines released the call for bids to seven national carpet mills for replacing 70,000 square yards of carpet and 25,000 square feet of raised access flooring in its Dallas-Fort Worth corporate facility, five of the mills selected Corporate Floors as their installer of choice.

Not only does Corporate Floors specialize in this type of installation, but reclamation was a requirement and Corporate Floors is the only commercial installer in Texas that owns an independent carpet recycling company.

"Several years ago we felt that the 'green' message was being diluted by claims being made by companies versus the reality of what could be done, particularly in the flooring industry," said Corporate Floors President Thomas Holland.

"In 2007, we attempted to find a partner who could recycle
all of our reclaimed carpet in an easy, low-cost manner. There were simply no options - so, we began Texas Carpet Recycling (TCR) to do it ourselves. Based on the job requirements for the installation/reclamation and a reputation we've worked hard to build, we were a natural fit for the American Airlines project."

With the American Airlines project, 70,000 yards of PVC-free Shaw modular carpet was installed by three crews of 10 installers working from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.,Monday through Saturday. To minimize disruption, the timeline of the project was compressed into 18 weeks from the normal 40-50 weeks with all of the work completed after hours.

TCR sent the old C & A modular carpet to Tandus where it was melted down and recycled into new modular carpet backing. Nearly 70, 30-yard dumpsters full of carpet were recycled.

As a result, TCR was nominated by Tandus and has been selected to receive an environmental award. TCR and American Airlines will be awarded the Environmental Leadership Award for Construction/Demolition Recycling from the Greater DFW Recycling Alliance, a council of the Recycling Alliance of Texas.

From July through December of 2007, TCR recycled more than 250 tons of carpet. This year the company expects that number to more than quadruple. Most of the carpet comes from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but TCR will accept carpet from anywhere in the State provided the project is more than a truckload.
