Consumer Sentiment Off in September

Ann Arbor MI, October 1-- Consumer sentiment slipped in September, falling victim to rising energy prices and a still-cautious employment market. The final reading on the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to 94.2 for September, compared with earlier estimates for the month of 95.8. September's final index reading also fell short of August's 95.9. The university releases two monthly versions of the index to subscribers. The first is a preliminary reading and the second, based on a more complete survey, represents the final gauge of how consumer confidence was holding up during the month. Economists has expected the index to hold relatively steady, with the latest reading pegged closer to 95.7.
