Consumer Price Index Falls in August

Washington, DC, Sept. 17, 2014 -- The consumer price index fell by 0.2% in August, which was the first decline since April 2013, according to the Labor Department.

Excluding food and energy, core CPI was unchanged, the first flat reading since October 2010.

"While the shelter index increased and the indexes for new vehicles and for alcoholic beverages also rose, these advances were offset by declines in several indexes, including airline fares, recreation, household furnishings and operations, apparel, and used cars and trucks," the department said.

On a year-over-year basis, both CPI and core-CPI rose by 1.7%.
