New York, NY, Jan. 22--Consumer confidence in the U.S. economy slipped last week, according to the latest ABC News/Money Magazine poll. The consumer comfort index fell 6 points to negative 27 in the week ended January 19, from negative 21 a week earlier.
According to the survey, just 24% of respondents expressed confidence in the economy, down from 26% the week before. Also, 52% of those polled said their own finances were in good standing, down from 55% in the prior week. In assessing the buying climate, 34% said it was good, down from 37% a week earlier.
The consumer comfort index was based on a random survey of 1,008 respondents nationwide ended January 19. The index measures typical Americans' confidence in three areas: the national economy, their own finances, and their willingness to spend money, according to the report.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.
