Columbia Team Installs Flooring in Habitat for Hum

Danville, VA, March 7--Columbia Flooring plant manager Kevin Goins and seven of his company team leaders left corporate concerns behind as they laid donated laminate flooring in Arlene Irby’s new home, according to Danville Register and Bee. Irby, her daughter, Tamara, and granddaughter, Cherrie, will be the proud owners of the Methodist House - the 20th house Danville-Pittsylvania Habitat for Humanity has built since 1991. “Columbia Flooring has become a great partner for us,” Habitat board of directors president Ben Prescott said. Habitat executive director Marlin Yoder said Columbia Flooring has given the local Habitat for Humanity more than $6,000 for construction of homes. In addition, it has donated 900 square feet of engineered hardwood flooring for Habitat’s Hero House several doors down from the Methodist House, and has donated 1,600 square feet of laminate flooring for the Irbys’ house and another Habitat house. When the flooring was installed at the Hero House, Columbia Flooring staff came out and trained Habitat volunteers how to do the job, Columbia Flooring plant manager Kevin Goins said. This time around, Goins said he came up with the idea of bringing staff out to lay the flooring themselves, both as a donation of labor and as a team-building project for his company’s team leaders. “Just looking at it, you can see it’s going to be a beautiful floor,” he said, looking down at the Oakwood Manor Auburn Clicette segments being pieced together. “We’re getting a lot back in return - the satisfaction of helping and the team building.” “The company really supports this kind of work. It’s a win-win situation,” Goins said. The house at 208 Banner St. is a joint effort between the local Habitat for Humanity and the United Methodist churches of Danville and Pittsylvania County, according to Yoder. The churches raised more than $40,000 and provided much of the labor for the house’s construction. Habitat Houses are sold to families at no profit and financed with no-interest mortgages held by Habitat for Humanity.
