City Gets Grant for Clean Up of Former Carpet Plan

Amsterdam. NY, Feb. 2--Amsterdam gets grant to clean up ex-carpet manufacturing site. A $1.7 million state environmental grant will help pay for the restoration of a former carpet manufacturing plant in Amsterdam, N.Y, according to the Albany Business Review. Following the cleanup, the 23.5-acre former Mohasco Mills Complex would be suitable for recreational, commercial, or industrial uses, according to Gov. George Pataki's office. The site was used from the 1880s to 1984 for carpet manufacturing, including milling, weaving, and dye operations. Previous cleanup efforts have included the removal of electrical transformers, asbestos, coal and fly-ash, and soil that was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls and petroleum. The funds will be used to remove debris and more contaminated soil, demolish buildings and foundations, as well as the smokestack at a former steam power plant located at the site.
