China Adds Reciprocal Tariffs of 125% to U.S. Hardwood Products

Sterling, VA, April 21, 2025-On April 11, China matched the U.S.'s increased tariff with a 125% rate on U.S. products, including hardwoods, according to the Decorative Hardwoods Association.

This applies to goods shipped after April 10 that arrive in China after May 13. Per the Chinese government, "at the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for U.S. goods exported to China."

The impact on American based sawmills will be a double edged sword. Less demand for logs bound for China will mean lower prices for domestic customers, but sawmills could go out of business if they can't cover their overhead with reduced volume.
