Chain Store Sales Off 1.4% Last Week

New York, NY, January 19, 2006—The International Council of Shopping Centers said that, for the week ending Jan. 14, retail chain stores sales fell 1.4 percent. The year-over-year pace also softened to 3.1 percent. This past week retail chain store sales were influenced by a number of factors including warmer weather and rising gasoline prices, said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC's chief economist and director of research. Despite the results this past week, industry sales are still expected to rise by 3 percent to 3.5 percent, on a year-over-year basis for January, Niemira said.
