Carpet Recyclers Hits 100M Pound Mark

Fullerton, CA, April 20, 2011 -- The Carpet Recyclers of La Mirada, Calif. have collected and recycled 100 million pounds of post-consumer carpet since beginning operations in 2009, the company said in a press release.

The firm said it is on track to recycle over 60 million pounds of carpet in 2011. It also said it has created 60 new green jobs in California and expects that number to increase to 150 by the end of the year.

Also, Carpet Recyclers said it is increasing production in its zero-waste-to-landfill facility, exclusive to the Western U.S., expanding transportation services, and developing a state-wide network of post-consumer carpet collection centers.

As of July 1, California's new carpet recycling law requires a 5-cent carpet stewardship assessment to be placed on every square yard of carpet sold in California. The assessment must be shown on all invoices to increase consumer awareness.

Carpet America Recovery Effort has been designated as the industry stewardship organization charged with implementing the law's goals.

"We have already seen a steep increase in awareness and interest in carpet recycling due to the good work of CARE and CalRecycle," said Larry Fink, president of The Carpet Recyclers.
