Carpet Pioneer Herbert Doerr Jr. Dies in Maine
Brunswick, ME, Oct. 18, 2010--Herbert E. Doerr Jr., the great grandson of the founder of Philadelphia Carpet, died Oct. 7 after a long illness.
In 1958 Doerr and his brother bought a company, Mylu Carpet, in Cartersville, Ga. where they produced tufted carpet, an innovation that revolutionized the carpet industry. Their output was distributed by Philadelphia Carpet. Later both companies were sold to Shaw Industries.
Doerr then bought a mill in Chattanooga, commuting between there and Philadelphia. He sold that mill in 1970 and retired. That mill is now the major factory for Karastan Carpets.
