Business Roundtable Commends Passage of House Heal

Washington, DC, July 28, 2006--Business Roundtable, an association of 160 chief executive officers whose companies represent more than 10 million employees and provide health care for more than 34 million Americans, today released the following statement commending House passage of H.R. 4157, the Health Information Technology Promotion Act, which would accelerate the creation of a nationwide, interoperable health information technology infrastructure. “A comprehensive, interoperable health information technology infrastructure is critical to making our health care system safer and more affordable,” said John J. Castellani, president of Business Roundtable. “Today’s vote brings us one step closer to establishing a nationwide system that will reduce administrative costs, increase quality and efficiency, and improve patient safety. “With a projected $165 billion in annual savings, America’s health system and our economy cannot afford to further delay a national health IT infrastructure. “We urge House leaders to capitalize on the current momentum and begin working with Senators Enzi and Kennedy--whose leadership resulted in Senate approval of similar health IT legislation last year--to produce a conference report so Congress can send a health IT bill to the President to sign before the end of the year.”
