Burning Debris Catches Shaw Plant Roof on Fire

Dalton, GA, Aug. 7, 2008--A Wednesday afternoon fire at a Shaw Industries plant damaged part of the building’s roof but no one was hurt.

The plant is a needle punch plant that makes floorcovering and mats, Bill Barron, vice president of manufacturing for Shaw, told the Dalton Daily Citizen.

“A backing line sparked a fire inside an oven,” Barron said. “(The fire) went up the stack and some debris came out of the fire, fell on the roof and caught some tar on fire.”

Barron said he didn’t know exactly how much damage was done.

“We will have to wait until it cools off to get inside the finishing oven where the fire was,” he said.

The work will be transferred to a Shaw plant in Calhoun, Barron said. But the “majority” of the plant’s 110 to 120 employees are expected to be able to continue to work at the plant, he said.
