Brooklyn, NY, February 18--IceStone, LLC, the Brooklyn manufacturer of recycled-glass based durable surface material used for countertops and flooring, has been awarded $200,000 in research and development funding from New York State's Environmental Investment Program (EIP).
The investment will help IceStone improve its manufacturing process, reduce its waste, and set the stage for the company's continued growth.
IceStone, which makes durable surfacing from up to 75% recycled glass and cement, will use the funding to increase production of high-quality material and speed up its sales cycle. The investment will also allow IceStone, which purchased 385 tons of post-consumer recycled glass last year, to eventually increase its production capacity and, as a result, enable it to remove even more glass from the waste stream.
"This is an example of public policy at its finest," said IceStone co-CEO Peter Strugatz. "This money is an investment in both the environment and the local economy."
Made from post-consumer recycled glass embedded in a scientifically advanced cement compound, IceStone durable surface material is appropriate for any household or commercial application where granite or other mined stone might be used, such as kitchen counters, tabletops, bathroom vanities, or flooring. The product is manufactured using an environmentally friendly process in a day lit factory.
Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, IceStone recruits employees from the surrounding community, pays a living wage, and offers a family-supportive and inclusive workplace. IceStone is a triple bottom-line company that aspires to be a pioneer in the surface materials industry with products that are beautiful, environmentally sustainable, and made in a manner compatible with the highest level of corporate responsibility.
