Greenville, MS, Nov. 3--Technological advancements and sluggish market conditions are the main reasons cited for the layoff of 150 hourly and salaried employees at the company’s production facilities in Greenville, Mississippi. The layoff will be effective December 14.
Mark Worgan, CEO of Brintons U.S.Axminster, made the announcement, stating, “We regret that we must take this action, but we must continue to invest in newer weaving equipment and processes which are necessary for us to remain competitive in the high end carpet marketplace.”
The company will no longer use its Cromption & Knowles weaving equipment which was manufactured in the 1920s and 30s. According to Worgan, these older spool looms have become increasing expensive to operate and maintain. “Since 1998, we have invested almost $15 million in the Greenville facility, including newer and more efficient Gripper & Platt Weaving equipment, as well as new finishing equipment, and a state-of-the-art package dyeing department that was opened in April of this year,” stated Worgan.
“We remain committed to our goal of producing the finest carpets in the world, and believe that the restructure, painful though it may be, will enable us to better focus our resources, control costs, and provide our customers with timely delivery. Local and state agencies have been advised of the situation and we will assist our dislocated employees in any way that we can.”
Worgan also noted that the company’s customer base in the hospitality market has not completely recovered from the effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorist’s attacks. In addition, the U.S. industry is experiencing increased competition from lower labor cost countries.
